Orthodontic treatment has evolved significantly from the days of headgear and traditional metal braces. Today, many qualifying patients can choose Invisalign, a modern orthodontic solution that uses clear, custom-made aligners instead of brackets and wires. These aligners apply controlled pressure on the teeth to gradually move them into proper alignment, helping achieve a balanced bite and a natural looking smile.
One of Invisalign’s main advantages is its discreet design, allowing patients to straighten their teeth with minimal impact on their appearance. Treatment times are often shorter than those associated with traditional braces, though results still require consistency and patience. Understanding the process and maintaining realistic expectations is an important part of treatment planning.
So how long does Invisalign treatments typically take? What factors can influence the timeline? Let’s explore what patients can expect.

The first step for any dental procedure is a consultation with your dentist or orthodontist. This may consist of a comprehensive exam, and a discussion about your goals for the treatment. Next, your dentist will take scans or impressions of your teeth, along with x-rays and photographs. These images will serve as the diagnostic tool for determining your need for Invisalign, and determining how well the procedure will work.
Once you are an approved candidate for Invisalign, you will be given a customized treatment plan tailored to your goals and health needs. The images from your consult will be used to create your customized liners, ensuring that they perfectly fit your teeth. For most patients, the process from meeting with your dentist to having your customized liners ready to wear can take anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks after this appointment.
Once your aligners arrive, your dentist will have you come in to ensure they are a good fit. You will be shown how to put them in and take them out, as well as how to properly clean them (this step is very important). You will be given instructions on how often to wear them (most people take them out for meals). It’s very important to wear them for 20-22 hours every day to keep to your expected treatment schedule.
Remember that the first few days of wear can be uncomfortable as your teeth begin to move. This could feel like a slight tightness in the teeth, rather than pain, which you should adjust to the more you wear your aligners. Your dentist will have advice about how to make them feel more comfortable as you learn to adjust to them.

This is the most important – and time consuming – process of Invisalign treatments. With luck, your treatment should go smoothly, and you can count on seeing your new and improved smile within 6 to 18 months. You can take the aligners out for eating and drinking anything other than water. You’ll have multiple sets of aligners that are intended to be worn for 1-2 weeks at a time, before moving on to the next set. This scheduling process allows for new aligners that fit your newly shifting teeth, with each set progressing gradually to the “finish line” you’ve determined with your dentist.
During this treatment process, you’ll have regular check-ins with your dentist roughly every 6 to 8 weeks. Your dentist will check on your progress to ensure that everything is going according to plan, and provide you with the next set of aligners as they are needed. Depending on how your progress is going, you may be able to have these appointments remotely. However, it’s still important to have your teeth examined in person to make sure everything is going as expected.
While Invisalign takes an average of 6-18 months, it’s only an average: it doesn’t apply to every single patient. Here are a few factors to be aware of which could prolong your treatment:
By the time you make it to this stage, you’ve completed the bulk of the work in straightening your teeth. The finish line is in sight! But there’s still about 1 to 3 months to go as you are given your final set of aligners, just to “finalize” the hard work that’s been done. These aligners will make any minor adjustments, more for aesthetics at this point than for health and function.
You may be asked to visit your dentist to review the progress and then be recommended a retainer once the process is complete. This retainer may not have to be worn as often as your aligners: perhaps at nighttime only, depending on the condition of your teeth.
Remember that the best way to keep your new teeth looking and feeling their best is to keep up with your regularly scheduled dental cleanings.
